Pageant Season: What Are the Judges Actually Looking At?

Every year we get the same question in the fitting room, usually from a mom holding a phone with fourteen screenshots on it: what do the judges actually want to see? After outfitting Michigan competitors for as long as we have, the honest answer is that they are not looking for the most expensive dress in the room. They are looking for a girl who looks like she belongs in it.

 

Here is what we have learned about choosing a gown that holds up under stage lights and a very close second look.

When should you start looking for a pageant dress?

Earlier than you think, and for a reason that has nothing to do with picking. It is alterations. A competition gown has to fit at the ribcage, bust and hip within a quarter inch, because the stage is the one place where a slightly loose bodice reads from thirty feet away. Eight to ten weeks out is comfortable. Four weeks is possible. Two weeks and we are all going to be stressed.

 

If you are competing in more than one system this season, come in once and plan the whole year with us. It usually saves money.

What does a gown have to survive on stage?

Three things, and they are not the things Instagram prepares you for.

 

Light. Stage lighting is brutal to flat fabric. It washes out anything without texture and it finds every seam. This is why hand-applied beadwork outperforms a printed or bonded sparkle every time: real embellishment catches light from different angles as you move, so the dress stays alive while you walk. A gown that looks incredible under our warm fitting-room bulbs can go completely flat under a white spotlight.

 

Movement. You are walking, turning, taking stairs, and standing still for longer than feels natural. Interior structure and a hem finished to your actual shoe height are the difference between a gown you wear and a gown you manage.

 

Inspection. In an interview and on-stage question, someone is looking at you from a few feet away. Puckered seams, glued stones, and a bodice that gaps when you breathe are all visible at that distance.

What about the interview outfit nobody talks about?

This is the part most girls underprepare, and it is often where the scoring is decided. The interview is not a smaller version of the evening gown. You want to look composed, current, and like yourself, in something you can sit down in without adjusting.

Jovani does color better than almost anyone, and the fits tend to be forgiving in the places competitors worry about most.

 

Amarra is our fit-first pick, and it is the line we push hardest for pageant specifically. Fabrics, silhouettes, and even beading can affect the dress’ fit so it’s customary to add at least an inch in measurements to ensure the dress is still wearable; this means each dress is a custom look and not a custom fit.
