Pageant Season: What Are the Judges Actually Looking At?

Every year we get the same question in the fitting room, usually from a mom holding a phone with fourteen screenshots on it: what do the judges actually want to see? After outfitting Michigan competitors for as long as we have, the honest answer is that they are not looking for the most expensive dress in the room. They are looking for a girl who looks like she belongs in it.

 

Here is what we have learned about choosing a gown that holds up under stage lights and a very close second look.

When should you start looking for a pageant dress?

Earlier than you think, and for a reason that has nothing to do with picking. It is alterations. A competition gown has to fit at the ribcage, bust and hip within a quarter inch, because the stage is the one place where a slightly loose bodice reads from thirty feet away. Eight to ten weeks out is comfortable. Four weeks is possible. Two weeks and we are all going to be stressed.

 

If you are competing in more than one system this season, come in once and plan the whole year with us. It usually saves money.

What does a gown have to survive on stage?

Three things, and they are not the things Instagram prepares you for.

 

Light. Stage lighting is brutal to flat fabric. It washes out anything without texture and it finds every seam. This is why hand-applied beadwork outperforms a printed or bonded sparkle every time: real embellishment catches light from different angles as you move, so the dress stays alive while you walk. A gown that looks incredible under our warm fitting-room bulbs can go completely flat under a white spotlight.

 

Movement. You are walking, turning, taking stairs, and standing still for longer than feels natural. Interior structure and a hem finished to your actual shoe height are the difference between a gown you wear and a gown you manage.

 

Inspection. In an interview and on-stage question, someone is looking at you from a few feet away. Puckered seams, glued stones, and a bodice that gaps when you breathe are all visible at that distance.

What about the interview outfit nobody talks about?

This is the part most girls underprepare, and it is often where the scoring is decided. The interview is not a smaller version of the evening gown. You want to look composed, current, and like yourself, in something you can sit down in without adjusting.

 

We keep a full interview and professional wear section for exactly that reason, and it is one of the things that makes us different from a store that only does formals. A clean silhouette, a color that suits you awake at 8am, and absolutely nothing you have to hold in place. If you are tugging at it in the mirror, you will tug at it in the room.

Which designers should be on your list?

We carry a lot of lines. These are the ones we reach for when someone tells us they are competing.

 

Sherri Hill is the name most people walk in already knowing, and the drama is real. If you want a gown that announces itself before you finish crossing the stage, start here.

 

Jovani does color better than almost anyone, and the fits tend to be forgiving in the places competitors worry about most.

 

Amarra is our fit-first pick, and it is the line we push hardest for pageant specifically. Amarra is a formal wear designer that sells only through authorized stores like ours rather than an online checkout, which means every gown gets tried on and tailored by an actual person before it goes anywhere near a stage. What earns it a place in this list is the pageant and evening line: Amarra pageant dresses are built around structured bodices, sheer illusion panels, and hand-applied beadwork rather than surface print, which is exactly what survives the lighting problem above. Style 88149 is a beaded off-the-shoulder gown with a sheer corset bodice that reads beautifully in motion. Style 88147 is a one-shoulder ball gown with a back overskirt for anyone who wants the entrance moment. Style 88138 is a beaded sweetheart with a structured bodice, and it is the one we hand to competitors who want to be remembered for their walk and not their dress. The house line about their design is style, fit, and quality, and to their credit the fit part is the one you feel first.

 

Portia and Scarlett rounds out the list for evening gowns, especially if your system rewards a more fashion-forward look.

 

There is no single best pageant designer, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you something. There is a best gown for your height, your coloring, your system and your budget, and finding it is a conversation, not a search filter.

You get a fitting room, a consultant who has watched a lot of Michigan pageants, and an honest opinion. We will tell you when a dress is not doing you any favors, because we would rather you leave with the right one than the first one.

 

Bring your inspiration photos, your competition shoes if you have them, and whoever gives you the look that means no. Book a weekday appointment if you can, and give yourself the alterations runway.

For one weekend only Johnathan Kayne brings his best-selling and featured gowns from his latest collection of pageant, prom, and children’s dresses. With over 100 styles to choose from, girls can either purchase a style as it was designed or tweak details to create a customized look in the presence of fashion professionals.

The best way to start this process is to try on a variety of styles, even with customization, and gain a better understanding of your vision. Kayne comes prepared with a variety of fabric and color swatches, bead samples, silhouettes, and his unmatchable fashion expertise to bring your vision to life.

Trusting the process is key! It’s completely normal to change your mind during the design process. Alongside Kayne, our experienced team knows how to help and guide you to bring your ideas together in the best way possible. From trying on to sketching, you have full range of versatility when creating your dream dress!

Finally, to ensure your vision is everything you dreamed of, Kayne will sketch your gown beside you. After sketch approval, he will measure you and attach it with your very own one-of-a-kind dress. Fabrics, silhouettes, and even beading can affect the dress’ fit so it’s customary to add at least an inch in measurements to ensure the dress is still wearable; this means each dress is a custom look and not a custom fit.
